First Snow

We had our first snow today, October 22. This is not the first snow for the higher elevations, but first in Colorado Springs. It was just a light dusting.

Pedro is not happy at all and is very dramatic with his shivering--we need to get out his winter sweater.

The mountains were just beautiful. There has been some snow on the tops, but this morning all the evergreens were covered in snow. Just beautiful.

Not sure I am ready for winter, but I would love a snow day.

Layne Crazy Hair

Once again, she will probably kill me for posting these photos, but I thought they were cute. She is so quiet and reserved most of the time. She had a friend spend the night and they did the typical slumber party things. I did have to sneak in and get these. I am not sure she ever looks at the blog--so I think I am safe.

This is an unusual photo, because she is NEVER talking on her phone--only texting. Great acting Layne. I am not sure kids will know how to communicate verbally from her generation? Wow, I really sound like a parent.

Just when you think they are too old--they act like a kid again. I am going to try and promote that as much as possible.

Have a great weekend.

Track

For the last three days, we have spend our afternoons at Gary Berry Stadium. It is that time of year, the District Track Classic. The kids have Monday and Tuesday to qualify for the finals on Wednesday. Layne was running in two races--the 100M hurdles and the 300M hurdles. On Monday she qualified in the 100M hurdles and Tuesday just missed for the 300M hurdles.

Here she is in action. It had to be something like what a athletes goes through for the Olympics!! :) I am just so proud of her for going out there and jumping over those crazy hurdles!

So--the video below is Layne running the finals of the 100M Hurdles (she is in lane 8--which is the bottom most lane--when the video is sideways). She tied for 6th place. As you can see, Heath turned the camera and we just can't figure out how to rotate a video. For now, just tilt your head and if you know how to rotate a video--please, please let me know.

My challenge tomorrow is to take Layne's lead and not be afraid to run the hurdles!!

My Office.

For the past year and a half, I have shared my office with a co-worker. I had a tiny little sliver of a space. Not bad but small. This is Layne in my old space.

About a month ago, some movement of staff was done, and I was able to get my own space. Not far from my old area--just on the other side of the cubicle wall. The space is bigger and not so secluded. My co-worker was moved down the hall and now it is mostly all mine. So, two weekends ago--I did some painting are rearranging.

I had some great help from Heath and Layne--as you can see from this photo. Maybe Heath is doing more than Layne--she was good with all the details.

This is my new space and as you can see in the background--I did a nice accent wall. My old space is behind the wall to the right. It is still used for the credit card machine and there is storage in the closet (the door you can see behind the wall) so some traffic from time-to-time. We added more cubicle walls for privacy. The other office will still be there for interns.

I got to keep the picture of the boys!! They are rooting me on everyday!! Go Tori!! You are #1!!

A Beautiful Sunday Hike

Heath is always bugging us to go on a hike--so we did (10/5/08). It was a very easy trail but so beautiful. Once I am out there I often wonder why I am so difficult--I am sure there are many reasons. Anyway, it was late afternoon and our hike was cut a little short by some rain--but fun while it lasted.

I am really not sure what face Layne is making here and no matter what she might say, she enjoyed her time out in nature.

I grabbed this shot of Heath--I think it says it all? I really don't know what that means. He has developed (maybe it has always been there) a desire to become a mountain man.

If you look closely, you can see the city behind us. I just wish the photo could give you a better idea of the beauty. Is it me or is Layne getting pretty close to my height?

Layne and I were convinced that we heard a bear. So, for the better part of the hike she chose to sing and make very loud sounds--her attempt at keeping them away. I think in this photo Heath is telling her to shut up and still smile for the camera. Layne just thinks it is funny to be annoying!

We thought this was a very cool rock formation. Heath was sure he could climb it--I asked him to wait till next time.......

He did find this opening on the other side.

In the end, it was a nice little break from the silly things we find to do all day. I need to remember to take the time to do this more often.

After writing and re looking at all these photos, I have to take a minute to give some of my real thoughts. As I am looking at this last photo and how big Layne has gotten, I do get somewhat emotional--OK a lot. The time has gone so fast and only two more years before high school. I think back on our lives together and what we have done--I really get made at myself for all the stupid things I spend time and money on. I only wish we had made vacations and weekend get-aways more of a priority versus clothes and things. I know that when Layne has grown and thinks back--she won't remember how many Barbies I bought her or how many shoes she had or even what she got for her 5th birthday. It will be the memories of what we did as a family. I am committing myself to reevaluate my priorities before it is too late. The Stuff Doesn't Matter--and that is the quote of the day!!

Have a good one.

The Pumpkin Patch?????????

Last Saturday (10/4/08) after the Colorado Juniors Volleyball League--we headed east of Monument to the "Pumpkin Patch". This included Layne, 6 of her teammates from her club season last year, their parents and siblings. Now, being from Iowa and hearing that there is a pumpkin patch--I assumed that there would actually be a patch. That the pumpkins there would have been grown there. Well, I was wrong. No matter what it was, the girls had a really great time and truly just love being together. They are fun and goofy and I love to see Layne smile when she is with all of them.

So, below are some photos from the wonderful outing. I think the straw slide was their favorite. They would go down alone and then they would double-up and change partners and scream!!

With entry into the patch, they each got to choose a pumpkin. It was a very long process and they had to get in many of the big boxes that the pumpkins had been shipped in. How else to you get pumpkins to a patch?
They even had a wonderful petting zoo with 4 goats!!

I have always wanted to see Layne as a piece of candy corn.

They were all pretty pooped after the 1 hay bale high maze, the petting zoo, hay slide and then picking the perfect pumpkin--but still smiling!!

The next two pictures are from earlier that same day--before heading to Monument. We were meeting some others for the car pool to the league. Anyway, we came around a corner and these two deer casually walked across the street in front of us. They were just taking a little walk down the sidewalk.

The biggest difference between the deer here and deer in Iowa is that here they just hang out. You will see them all the time just sitting in some one's yard or chewing on their bushes--right in the middle of town. They don't seem quite as scared and pretty happy to just be checking things out.

Thanks for reading and I really love when you leave comments!! (HINT! HINT!)
